For Your Information
The best advice to you as a potential Havanese owner is to do your homework! Read about the breed, learn about the health issues, grooming and exercise requirements. Under absolutely NO circumstances should you consider the purchase of a Havanese puppy from a Pet Store or a Puppy Broker. Your best source for healthy puppies is the hobby breeder who shows their dogs in conformation events, health tests their foundation stock, belongs to breed organizations, and works with other reputable breeders toward a goal of breeding Healthy Havanese puppies bred to the AKC Havanese standard. Additionally, a reputable breeder will have a health warranty on their puppies which will tell you, the buyer, what they will do if your puppy develops a serious health issue. Good breeders do not want their puppies to end up in shelters and they require you to give them first option for taking a puppy back if you can no longer care for it. A good breeder's commitment to you to take a puppy back should be for the life of the dog!
Temperament
The Havanese is truly one of the most delightful of the small breeds. They are exceptionally intelligent and quick-witted. They are curious and busy constantly, their love of attention comes from their adorable little "show-off" natures. They are natural clowns and enjoy interludes of rowdy, madcap play, with a favorite game of run like "Hell" in circles and then stop on a dime.
The Havaneses' expression tells you that they miss nothing going on in the world around them: they love to sit somewhere high- especially on the back of sofa's and chairs. A stranger will never approach unwelcomed. They thrive on human companionship, and are at their best as a participating member of the family. They Love children and will play tirelessly with them at any game in which children delight.
The Havanese is a good breed for a first - time dog owner and for families with young children. Havanese are smart and agile enough for those who want a small dog for obedience or agility competitions. They do well in multiple - dog households, as they are not scrappers, they are a delightful dog for a city dweller because they are easy to train and are generally not noisy.
